Moving to a Bed

Moving out of a cot into a toddler bed is a big milestone for a child and can either be upsetting or exciting for them. Most children make the move between 18 months and 3 years but there are no golden rules.

If they are repeatedly trying to climb out of the cot or are too big to be comfortable, it’s time to move out. Often the move is prompted by the arrival of a new baby, if so; make the move a couple of months before so your toddler doesn’t feel ‘shoved out’.

Whatever the reason, making their sleeping space as safe, comforting and enticing will ease the move for everyone. If you are going from a cot to a toddler bed or single bed then it may seem huge and scary to them. Some top tips:

  • Cot beds are great for making the transition to a bed as it is cheaper, easier and more familiar to the child.
  • Fill up each end of the bed with lots of comforting and favourite soft toys, it will make the space feel more normal to your child.

  • Choose a bed which is lower down such as a toddler bed so it’s easier for them to climb in and out, and not so far to fall.
  • Put the child’s bed against the wall, it’s comforting and safer. Beds with headboards and footboards will seem familiar like a cot.
  • Tuck them in tightly on the open side of the bed to prevent them falling out. Or you could consider getting a guard rail.
  • Check the room and nearby areas carefully for hazards. If you still have a stair guard fitted at the top of the stairs, keep it closed at night in case of sleep walking or escape adventures.
